The Las Vegas Valley is a major metropolitan area in the southern part of the U. The names Las Vegas and Vegas are interchangeably used to indicate the Valley, the Strip , and the city, and as a brand by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to denominate the region. Since the s the Las Vegas Valley has seen rapid growth, tripling its population of , in to 2,, estimated in The Las Vegas Valley remains one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States, and in its relatively short history has established a diverse presence in international business, commerce, urban development and entertainment, as well as one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. In the 19th century, areas of the valley contained artesian wells that supported extensive green areas, or meadows , hence the name Las Vegas vegas being Spanish for "meadows".

The Nevada territory was virtually unexplored by Americans and Europeans until Spanish merchants established trading routes from Sante Fe to Los Angeles in As explorers and settlers moved westward throughout the American continent, Utah and California became influential neighbors to the Nevada territory. From dusty mule trails, to iron rails, to hot asphalt -- new routes have been surveyed, graded, and paved in order to pass goods and people between California and inner territories. Las Vegas blossomed as a key stopping point on the route, benefiting from three key things: location, location, location.

Rosemarie Melanson remembers staring down at the chaos breaking out at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, seeing her limp body splayed on the ground, blood coming from a bullet wound to her chest. She recalls floating in the sky away from frantic screams and the rain of gunfire that instantly obliterated what had been an awesome autumn night on the town with her two daughters.
