Although Rodin is recognized as one of the fathers of modern sculpture, his graphic work remains generally unknown. Through drawings and watercolors, executed between and , as well as 5 sculptures, this exhibition presents all the aspects of the body, from a simple to the most erotic nude. He first completes a series of drawings referred to as transitional, marked by two dominant colors, i. Later, he becomes committed to representing large female nudes, using the entire palette of drawing techniques to express physical sensuality: line drawing, stumping, watercolors and gouache. Rodin is looking for spontaneity and endeavors to capture movement in the moment.
Auguste Rodin: Images of Desire, Erotic Watercolors and Cut-outs
RODIN watercolors, drawings
Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent structure in clay, and many of his most notable sculptures were roundly criticised during his lifetime. They clashed with predominant figurative sculpture traditions, in which works were mostly decorative and formulaic. Breaking entirely with that tradition, Rodin modelled the human body with realism, character and sheer physicality. Here, however, we are more interested in Rodin as an illustrator and artist on paper, though his approach to these media arose from precisely the same creative well as his sculptures.
